Rio de Janeiro is well-known for its annual carnival season. This celebration is largely organized by the inhabitants of the favelas and dates back to 1723. About 2 million people per day participate in the giant street parades. The PROBA-V 100 m image of January 20th, 2015 shows Rio de Janeiro located at the Baía Guanabara. At the bottom of the image, the famous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches can faintly be seen, with the large Parque National de Tijuca located west of it.
