On this 100 m image taken at 16 September 2014, a large smoke plume in northern California (Union Valley reservoir region) can be seen in the upper right part. The plume was caused by a wildfire, which doubled in size in just 12 hours. Thousands of people were forced to leave their homes. The wildfire – known as the 'King' – was the biggest of 11 fires, in what officials described as the worst wildfire season on record.
