The Suez Canal is a 163 km long waterway that connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. The canal construction started in 1859 and it took 10 years until completion. After the completion, ship traffic to Asia was reduced by about 7,000 km. This 100 m image shows the southern part of the canal, with the city of Suez at the bottom of the image. Further, the Great Bitter Lake north of Suez is visible, as well as pivot irrigation fields northwest of the Lake.
