The city of Zhangye, China, is located in the Hexi Corridor, a part of the ancient northern Silk Road in northern China. The 100 m image of 4 June 2018 shows Zhangye in the lower-right part of the image, located along the Heihe River. Due to its strategic importance in its military and geographical location, Zhangye became the center of politics, economy, culture, and diplomatic activities of past dynasties in northern China. Furthermore, the combination of fertile soils and its location along the Heihe River, China’s second-largest river basin, result in flourishing agriculture, with among others grain and various sorts of fruits grown. To the southwest, snow-covered tops of the Qilian Shan mountain range can be seen. A part of this mountain range is known as the Rainbow Mountains, due to their colourful mineral layers. In the upper-right image part extensive sand dunes of the Badain Jaran Desert are shown.
