Hurricane Arthur interrupted many plans along the East Coast for the Fourth of July holiday. It began with a tropical depression that came off the coast of the Carolinas and drifted south towards the Bahamas. Arthur first became a tropical depression on 1 July and developed into a tropical storm later that day. It reached hurricane status on 3 July and finally became a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale on 4 July, before making landfall over North-Carolina.
