31/08/2019, Hurricane Dorian Hurricane Dorian is a strong tropical cyclone affecting the East Coast of the United States. It developed from a tropical wave on August 24 in the Central Atlantic. The system gradually intensified while moving toward the Lesser Antilles, before becoming a hurricane on August 28. Rapid intensification ensued, and on August 31, Dorian intensified into a Category 4 major hurricane. On the following day, Dorian reached Category 5 intensity, peaking with one-minute sustained winds of 185 mph (295 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 910 millibars (26.87 inHg) while making landfall in Elbow Cay, Bahamas, at 16:40 UTC. Dorian made another landfall on Grand Bahama several hours later, near the same intensity. The ridge of high pressure steering Dorian westward collapsed on September 2, causing Dorian to stall just north of Grand Bahama for about a day. (source Wikipedia)

28/09/2018, Medicane, Greece The Medicane – meaning Mediterranean Hurricane – has similar qualities of hurricanes and typhoons and has already caused flash flooding across Tunisia and Libya over the past few days.
The cyclone has been caused by an area of low pressure off the northern coast of Africa. The eye of the storm should track between the Peloponnese peninsula and Crete Island. On Saturday, it’s expected to move across southern Greece, forcing many cruiseships staying on shore.
15/09/2018, Hurricane Florence, North Carolina The 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season has been relatively quiet so far compared to previous year.
However, last weeks showed the development of the season’s first major hurricane, Florence.
As for most Atlantic hurricanes, it originated from a tropical wave off the West-African coast and during its path along the Atlantic basin it went through several stages of strengthening and weakening due to fluctuating sea surface temperatures and vertical wind profiles.
The 1 km image of last Saturday, 15 September 2018, one day after making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane over Wrightsville, North Carolina, Florence was captured by PROBA-V in its entirety.
Its high outflow clouds extend mainly into its upper quadrants over several thousand kilometers. The bands with the highest wind speeds and most intense rainfall occur within a few hundred kilometers from Florence’s eye.
23/05/20018, Cyclone Mekunu, Africa In this image from May 23rd, PROBA-V spotted the tropical cyclone Mekunu as it hit and flooded Socotra Island, before making landfall on the Arabian peninsula, near Salalah, Oman on May 25th 2018.
Mekunu caused flash floods and downed power lines, destroyed foodstocks, sunk 120 fishing boats and killed at least 30 people on the island, in Oman and in Yemen by the end of May. Triggering international food, water and sanitation aid efforts in the subsequent days and weeks.
Satellite imagery were instrumental in the meteorological alerting, by detecting the formation of the eye, as well as in the rapid impact assessment by United Nations officials.
Together with the impact of the on-going conflict in Yemen, it makes us our thoughts and sympathies go out to the many affected households and the vulnerable refugees in the region, commemorated in UN’s World Refugee Day on June 20.
14/09/2017, Typhoon Talim, Japan Typhoon Talim begun its sharp northeast turn toward Japan with a threat of high winds and flooding rainfall after lashing the Ryukyu Islands.
Talim is currently the equivalent of a Category 2 intensity typhoon in the East China Sea, and is now making the anticipated dogleg right turn.
Next up, Talim will accelerate and plow into Kyushu, Japan late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, local time, then quickly sweep over Shikoku and western Honshu through Sunday night, before the remnant, still intense extratropical low swipes the northernmost main island of Hokkaido Monday.
10/09/2017, Hurricane Irma, Carribean Hurricane Irma was an extremely powerful and catastrophic Cape Verde type hurricane. It was also the most intense Atlantic hurricane to strike the United States since Katrina in 2005, and the first major hurricane to make landfall in the state of Florida since Wilma in 2005.
Irma caused widespread and catastrophic damage throughout its long lifetime, particularly in parts of the northeastern Caribbean.
A quarter of all homes in the Florida Keys have been destroyed, according to Florida state officials.
09/09/2017, Hurricane Irma, Carribean It is highly unusual to have three hurricanes in the Atlantic basin at the same time (at left Katia, at right Irma, Jose is not on this image)- and even rarer for them all to be expected to make landfall on the same day!
Hurricane names are organised alphabetically throughout the year – with the first hurricane of 2017 called Arlene, followed by Bret, Cindy and so on.
This means hurricanes Irma, Katia and Jose had eight storms before them this season. However, the consequences of the six storms are completely different.
However, Irma is the deadliest of the lot.

28/03/2017, Cyclone Debbie Cyclone Debbie continues its slow, destructive journey across Queensland's northern coastline.
The storm is lashing the Queensland coast with torrential rain which, when combined with a dangerous storm tide, could cause major flooding, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.
The storm downed trees, stripped buildings and left shorelines swamped after making landfall as a Category 4 storm at midday near Airlie Beach and is expected to continue wreaking havoc for the rest of the week.
Authorities located in the East of Australia’s Queensland has urged residents of several Northern coastal areas to temporarily leave their homes and take refuge from the impending tropical cyclone “Debbie.”
To assist in the evacuation areas to the North of the state capital Brisbane is directed over thousands of rescue workers and military personnel.
