On 19 March 2014 and 30 March 2018, PROBA-V observed a wadi system in the Dhofar region of Oman. Originally, the Arabic term ‘wadi’ referred to ‘valley’, but nowadays it refers to dry riverbeds that only contain water after heavy rains. The branched Dhofar wadi system is visible in white, just to the south of the Rub’al Khali or “Empty Quarter”, the largest contiguous sand desert in the world which is visible in yellow. The red dots in the images are pivot irrigation fields of the Shisr/Wubar oasis. For about 15 centuries, this agricultural oasis and caravan site was a very important water supply station for the frankincense transportation routes from the inland to the ports along the coast.
