On July 23, the Landsat programme celebrates the 45th anniversary of the launch of the first civilian Earth Observation satellite, the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1), later renamed to Landsat-1. With Landsat-8 (or Landsat Data Continuity Mission, LDCM) in orbit today and Landsat-9 planned for launch in late 2020, the Landsat missions programme represents a truly impressive four decades of continuously acquired imagery of the Earth’s land surface.
