On July 23, the Landsat programme celebrates the 45th anniversary of the launch of the first civilian Earth Observation satellite, the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1), later renamed to Landsat-1. With Landsat-8 (or Landsat Data Continuity Mission, LDCM) in orbit today and Landsat-9 planned for launch in late 2020, the Landsat missions programme represents a truly impressive four decades of continuously acquired imagery of the Earth’s land surface. During the same week, 23-28 July, 2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS 2017) is organized at Fort Worth, Texas. Fort Worth was originally founded as an army outpost is, but boasts nowadays a very dynamic and contemporary downtown area, with several world-class museums and university communities. The Dallas – Fort Worth metroplex, shown in this PROBA-V false-colour image amidst several lakes, is the fourth most populated metropolitan area in the United States.
